This talk at EuroPython 2025 shows the path for a large Python migration, over 100 repositories at TravelPerk from Pydantic V1 to V2. It covers strategies for handling breaking changes, refactoring codebases, testing safely, and unlocking performance improvements.

At EuroPython 2025 in Prague, I presented “Zero-Drama Upgrades: Real-World Tactics for Major Python Migrations,” focusing on our experience migrating over 100 repositories at TravelPerk from Pydantic V1 to V2. The talk covered the practical strategies we used to handle breaking changes, refactor codebases at scale, and test safely without disrupting production.

The migration wasn’t straightforward. We hit compatibility issues and integration challenges across microservices. The talk walked through how we faced refactoring, built safety nets with comprehensive testing, and rolled out changes incrementally to minimize risk. We also explored the performance improvements we unlocked and how to measure them effectively.

What I enjoyed most came after the talk: the hallway conversations. I was thrilled to chat with the Pydantic team, who came over after my talk. They were genuinely interested in hearing what could have been done better and what to improve for version 3. Even after discussions with Sebastián Ramírez (tiangolo), they realized there were features we had implemented ourselves that might have been provided directly by the library. Sharing my experience felt meaningful, and I hope it contributes in some way to shaping what’s coming in the next release.

That’s what makes EuroPython so valuable: the blend of technical insight and community exchange. It’s not just about solving our own problems, but about learning from each other to make the next big change a little less dramatic.

See you at the next EuroPython! 🐍👋
